Psalm 32:8–9 …Don't Be Like the Horse or the Mule

"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be controlled with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you." — Psalm 32:8–9 (ESV)

God doesn't want a relationship with us that is forced, He gives us free will. However, He desires willing hearts—hearts that trust Him enough to follow His voice.

How many times have we waited until life became painful before we finally listened to God? He would much rather guide us through His love than through our consequences. 

When David says, "Do not be like a horse or a mule," he isn't saying horses or mules are bad animals. He's using them as an illustration. A horse or mule doesn't naturally know where to go. It often wants to go its own way or refuses to move, so its owner has to use a bit and bridle to pull, restrain, or force it in the right direction. 

It's as though God is saying: “I don't want you to need a bit and bridle. I want you to trust Me enough to follow My voice because you know I love you.”

This is why God says: "I will instruct you and teach you... I will counsel you with my loving eye on you."

God is not standing over us with anger. He is watching over us with love, ready to guide every step if we are willing to listen. His commands are never meant to take away our joy—they are meant to protect us from wandering into places that lead us away from Him. Every direction He gives comes from the love He has for us.

When it comes to drifting, it rarely happens all at once. It begins with small distractions, little compromises, and priorities that slowly take God's place. Before we realize it, we have become more attentive to the voices of the world than to His voice. Whatever captures our attention will eventually influence the direction of our lives.

When our attention is consumed by our own desires, the approval of others, success, money, comfort, or anything else that takes His place, we begin to drift because we have stopped following His loving guidance.

Can you imagine the sadness of a loving Father watching His child slowly walk away—not because He has stopped loving them, but because they have become captivated by everything else besides Him. Little by little, their attention shifts. Their time with Him becomes less important. As the voices of the world grow louder in our hearts, we become less attentive to His voice. Yet through it all, His eyes remain fixed on His children, longing for the day they turn back.

He doesn't want your heart to be captured by things that will one day fade away. He wants you to remain close to Him because He knows that true peace, lasting joy, and real fulfillment are found in His presence alone. That is the heart behind His words, "it will not stay near you." Like a horse or mule that wanders without guidance, we can drift when our hearts begin chasing other things. As we drift, we lose sight of His love—not because His love has left us, but because we have wandered from the One who loves us. His desire has always been to keep you near lovingly. That is why He calls to you before you drift—not to condemn you, but to draw you back into the closeness of His love, where you find rest, you find peace, and your eyes are fixed on Him once again.

He is patiently waiting with open arms, ready to guide you once again if you will simply listen to His voice again.

Stay close. Trust His direction.

Do not let the noise of this world become louder than His voice. Do not let temporary things steal your attention from the One who loves you eternally. He knows the path before you. He sees the dangers you cannot see, and He knows the blessings that await those who trust Him.

He longs to lead you with His loving eye upon you, not with a bit and bridle. Walk with Him willingly, trust Him completely, and let His love guide every step you take.

The closer you stay to Him, the less likely you are to drift away.
