Isaiah 55:8–9:...His Ways Are Higher

There is a kind of distance from God that we don’t always recognize at first but let us look at the type of distance we know so far.
The distance we create from God can exist in both those who walk in the Spirit and those who do not. As we mentioned in a previous post, the distance we feel while in the spirit is often created by our own sin and pride. “But your iniquities have separated you from your God…” (Isaiah 59:2)
For those who are not walking with Him, that distance can be deeper — a life lived apart from Him altogether.
And yet, there is another kind of “distance” we must understand—not one created by sin, but one defined by who God is.
Isaiah 55:8–9:
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”
This is not the distance of separation—
this is the distance of holiness.
God’s ways are higher.
His thoughts are greater.
His understanding is beyond ours.
David recognized this when he cried out: “From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” (Psalm 61:2)
The “rock” is God himself–- His strength, stability, and protection
He is unshakable when everything else feels uncertain
He is a refuge when your heart feels overwhelmed.
He is higher—greater than your emotions, your problems, and your limitations.
So when anxiety rises and you can’t see a way forward…know that He sees the end from the beginning.
When a door closes and you don’t understand why…know that He knows what He is protecting you from.
When prayers feel delayed…know that He is working in ways you cannot yet perceive.
God is infinitely wiser, infinitely superior, infinitely greater than we could ever hope to be.
There must be an awareness of this holy distance between God and ourselves.
He knows what we do not know.
He sees what we cannot see.
He understands what we cannot comprehend.
Why does this matter?
Because we must recognize that our perspective is limited and incomplete. Our understanding is narrow.
And that realization changes everything.
Because when life doesn’t make sense… when prayers seem unanswered… when circumstances feel confusing or even painful—we remember this:
God is higher.
God is wiser.
God is superior.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5–6)
Our perspective is limited.
Our understanding is incomplete.
But God is not.
It is okay if you do not understand why things unfold the way they do. What we truly need is faith in the One who does.
He sees what you do not see.
His ways are not our ways.
His thoughts are higher than our thoughts.
There is purpose in all things.
Even if it escapes our understanding, it never escapes His.
Maybe today you don’t understand what God is doing.
Maybe things feel uncertain, delayed, or even painful.
But you are not forgotten.
You are not unseen.
You may not understand His ways—but you can trust in Him,
Don’t let confusion create distance.
Don’t let unanswered questions keep you from Him.
Instead, draw near.
Even now.
The same God who is higher than you…
is also the One who draws near to you.
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)
Share this with someone who needs to be reminded: God is higher… and still near.
